The American Red Cross provides round-the-clock services for
military members and their families by utilizing its
communications system which sends messages about birth, illness
or death of a close family member to military bases worldwide.
Emergency communications services are provided at no charge to
military families.

The American Red Cross’ Disaster
Services program is prepared to initiate response to any
disaster, regardless of its size, type or scope, including
terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. Disaster relief
services sustain human life, reduce the harsh physical and
emotional distress that prevents victims from meeting their own
basic needs, and promotes the recovery of victims when such
relief assistance is not available from other sources.

The Team is comprised
of an executive director, two part-time pediatric sexual assault
nurse examiners, a victim advocate, a part-time program
assistant and a contracted medical director from Children’s
Hospital in Akron. The team provides medical evaluation and
treatment for abuse in a comfortable child friendly setting.
Children and families also receive referrals, judicial advocacy
and crisis intervention.

The Housing & Emergency Support
Services program’s primary focus is to help ensure that Portage
County residents have access to the support necessary to
maintain critical basic needs. Services provided include
short-term case management, advocacy, information and referral,
coordination of services, and financial assistance.

Community House provides emergency shelter to men, women and
children facing a housing crisis.

Safer Futures provides shelter
and support services for victims of domestic violence in a
comfortable, safe environment. Services offered include outreach
advocacy, emergency assistance, basic needs, case management and
advocacy, child advocacy, educational groups, safe exchange and
provides a handicap-accessible facility.

This program can assist Portage County residents
with utility shut-offs and deposits, prescriptions, emergency
dental, food, clothing, and disaster assistance. Another
activity of this program is Shoes On My Feet, which provides
shoes and boots for children from low-income families.
